Bird Island Monitoring St Simons Sound

Bird Island was created using dredge spoils from the port of Brunswick to create habitat for nesting birds. This island was to be predator free for the colony nesting. GA DNR conducts surveys to understand productivity. This project has been successful with large numbers of Royal Terns nesting annually as well as other colonial nesting seabirds like Brown Pelicans and Sandwich Terns. Shorebirds like American Oystercatchers also nest on this dredge spoil island.
