Horseshoe Crab Conservation

Horseshoe crab conservation is an important part of protecting resources for migratory shorebirds. There is no harvest of horseshoe crabs in Georgia currently, but harvest of crabs for the biomedical industry is occurring in South Carolina. Partners including GA DNR, Manomet, One Hundred Miles, USFWS and others are working together to quantify horseshoe crab spawning, using a coordinated egg sampling method since 2023. We need this information so we have benchmark data about spawning to protect crabs in Georgia from future threats.
